Gas Detection & Monitoring

At Site Security and Traffic Control, our confined space standby officers are trained in first aid, preparing a confined space for opening and freeing gas from the area’s atmosphere in preparation for accessing the area. Our standby officers manage confined spaces, this includes continuously monitoring and recording the area’s atmosphere, tracking the worker entering and exiting the confined space, and maintaining constant communication. SSTC uses various pieces of gas testing equipment for gas detection & monitoring, including a range of four gas and five gas monitors. Our five gas monitors can monitor over 100 VOC gases – depending on what material occupies, or had previously occupied, the area’s atmosphere in your confined space.

Gas Detection & Monitoring

It is an important part of workplace safety to monitor the surroundings for hazardous gases, particularly when entering a confined space. Some gases, such as carbon monoxide, can be difficult to detect without gas detection & monitoring equipment. The difficult gases to detect often cannot be smelt, tasted, or seen, making them extremely hazardous.

To maintain the highest level of safety, a gas detector needs to be used to ensure there are no hazardous gases present. This is often done by a confined space standby officer that will also monitor the oxygen levels in the area. Because entering a confined space, particularly if there are hazardous gases present, can be quite dangerous, there is a fair amount of documentation required.

More

SSTC can supply all documentation required for working in a confined space, from isolation forms, confined space entry permits, risk assessment, safe work method statements and rescue plans. SSTC can also supply all your equipment needs for entering and exiting a confined space safely and efficiently. Some pieces of equipment we have to offer are tripods, full arrest, breathing apparatus, radio communication, harnesses, and much more to keep your site and workers safe when entering confined spaces.

Confined Space Standby Officers

While there is a worker in a confined space on a site, it is required that a confined space standby officer monitors the area and does not commence any other duties while any person is inside the confined space. As part of SSTC’s industrial services, we can supply a confined space standby officer along with equipment and documentation when your workers need to enter a confined space. The standby officer wears the same level of protection as those that are entering the confined space so that they are able to not enter, but view the work being done, if possible, from the entry.

A confined space standby officer’s main focus is the safety of those inside the confined space and monitoring for any risks, hazards, or dangerous gases that may become present. At SSTC, our confined space standby officers are highly trained in gas detection & monitoring and strictly comply with the control measures stated in the rescue plan, confined space entry permit, and other documentation needed for entry. Our standby officers are extremely observant of risks, efficient and effective communicators, and work exceptionally well with our first response teams.

Documentation

Safety is paramount at SSTC, and two of the core components of safety are prevention and preparedness for hazards and risks. Documentation and training assist in these two core components to ensure all those on the site are aware of the procedures in cases of accidents or incidents. As part of our industrial services, our security consultants can supply all needed documentation to enter a confined space, such as isolation forms, confined space entry permits, risk assessment, safe work method statements and rescue plans. By supplying this documentation, our security consultants ensure safety, as well as seamless communication between those in the confined space, the confined space standby officer, and first response teams if needed.

Equipment

SSTC can supply all your equipment needs for entering and exiting a confined space safely and efficiently, including tripods, full arrest, breathing apparatus, radio communication, harnesses and whatever else may be required. SSTC also has various gas detection & monitoring pieces of equipment, including four gas and five gas monitors. Depending on what material occupies the atmosphere in your confined space, our five gas monitors can detect over 100 VOC gases.

By using this equipment, our team can ensure the safety of the workers as well as minimise the risk of any hazards or incidents occurring. If an incident were to occur, our first response teams are equipped with confined space rescue equipment to ensure an efficient and successful rescue.

FAQs

What is gas detection?

Gas detection is detecting potentially harmful gases in a confined space or on a worksite. To maintain the highest level of safety, a gas detector must be used to ensure no harmful gases are present.

What is gas monitoring?

Gas monitoring involves a monitoring device to check the presence and levels of harmful gases in a confined space or on a worksite.

Does gas detection & monitoring require qualifications?

Yes, to work in gas detection and monitoring, you must have qualifications and be properly trained, which all of our team members are.

Why use us for gas detection & monitoring?

At SSTC, all of our gas detection and monitoring consultants are certified, accredited and experienced, so you can guarantee we’ll deliver quality results. We have five gas monitors which can monitor over 100 VOC gases, depending on what material occupies, or previously occupied, the area’s atmosphere in your confined space.

When do you need gas detection & monitoring?

You need gas detection and monitoring when entering a confined space or a space that may have been exposed to harmful gas. Some gases, such as carbon monoxide, can be difficult to detect without proper monitoring equipment, which is where we come in.
